March 9th, 2006
This is an image of all the items listed during the 24 hours of November 6, 2005. Click for a big version to see just how detailed it is (2mb JPEG file). Items are arranged organically around a circle representing all 24 hours of the day. Follow the blue line from any item to the center to determine precisely what time of day that item was listed. The slowest time of day is the notch towards the bottom while the busiest listing activity seemed to be around 10 or 11 pm EST.
This is the opposite direction of the new Time Machine Jared’s working on. He’s sticking to 2d linear space, building something that will make it fast and easy to browse through all the items listed on Etsy. This takes a mighty effort, forgoing his beloved Z-axis and circular nodes. Bon courage, Jared!

I dig this. it’s a beautiful image. but in addition to seeing when items are listed, I’d like to see when items are purchased. the radial shows us when sellers are most busy, but it would also be great to see when buyers are most busy. :)

I agree with the other comments …”It is cool”. That said, I think it would have been easier and in the long run used more if you had done something like Flickr does and have the movie concept so a person could quickly watch the items go by in front of their eyes and not have to click on lots of little pictures. Or maybe I am doing it wrong.

Dyno, a radial showing when sales are would look almost identical to the above one. Same times for most site activity.

Totally awesome. I don’t understand why instead of just appreciating it for what it is, peole have to ask why it wasn’t done this way or requestr something different. Anyone can make a spreadsheet of listings or sales or views, this is a piece of art. Take a deep breath and just lose yourself in it for a while.

lovely! reminds me of an art show that some MIT folks did a couple years back whe they were trying to visualize ‘friend networks’ for friendster and the like.
Though we’d need bigger picures to surf that effectively… Tho I sure do love the spirals– and I’m going to stare at the new thing and see if a rose or a buddah appears from the ordered chaos.

Geesh, do you guys ever quit?!?!? Are you printing postcards of this…a museum tour with your techno graphical masterpieces? I LOVE checking the blog because there seems to always be a little surprise waiting to greet me! I must start an “etsy guys fan club” or something.
